Troy Corstens is undoubtedly one of Victoria’s leading trainers, boasting two Group One wins and over $10 million in prize money so far over his twelve-year career. As he has now become the trainer of Not a Single Doubt X Countess Dehere, the first Geelong Community horse partnered with miRunners, we decided to delve into the background of Troy Corstens…
Who is Troy Corstens?
Troy was born in Adelaide before moving to Melbourne when he was just four years old, when his father Leon landed the foreman’s job for legendary trainer Bart Cummings. Following 25 years as a foreman for Cummings, Leon embarked on his own journey as a trainer in 1994 and has since successfully trained 9 Group One winners and accumulated in excess of $24 million in prize money.
Although Troy grew up around the paddock, the desire to become a trainer hasn’t always been there. Following years of trying to figure out a career path, he fell back into the industry due to his pure love for horses. He began his career managing Leon’s training operation, which ultimately formed the bases of “Team Corstens”.
Malua Racing…
In late 2010, Troy launched Malua Racing with fellow Victorian trainer John Sadler, initially opening up 24 stables at Flemington. The business grew rapidly, spurring them to open an additional training complex catering for 30 horses in Ballarat. Troy and John shared success for just under four years, until Sadler decided to split from Malua Racing, leaving Troy in charge.
Following Sadler’s departure in 2014, Troy announced the official training partnership with father Leon under the banner of Malua Racing. Together, they have three separate stable locations and operate successfully out of each facility. Malua Racing now has the capacity for 75 stabled horses at Flemington, and 50 stables at a farm in Balnarring. In late 2017, they acquired 18 boxes at Geelong Racecourse, with the aim of using it as their base for training their young horses.
Team Corsten’s biggest successes
Team Corsten’s first major winner was Commanding Jewel in the Group Two Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington in September 2014. Over two years into their partnership, Leon and Troy scored their first combined Group One winner with Awesome Rock in the 2016 VRC Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington. Not only was it the first Group One win for the father-son duo, it also marked the first Group One winner of Troy’s training career making it one he will never forget.
More recently, they secured their second Group One winner in Montoya’s Secret at Rosehill Gardens in early 2017. This was a particularly special victory as it marked the first Sydney Group One win for the father-son duo, and the first for Troy as a trainer. During last year’s racing season, Team Corsten’s trained 56 winners and so far this season have also produced a number of exciting victors. Among them are the likes of Thrillster, King’s Command, Spring Choice, Runson and Thunderdome, who are all winners of Listed races and certainly have exciting racing futures ahead.
