miRunners Update March 2025

As we move through the year at a rapid pace, it is incredible to see the progress of our latest miRunners yearlings. The new purchases from this year’s sales are now beginning their education, and it won’t be long before they start making their way to the track. We have specifically targeted early 2 year old types that are heading to stables where they will be given every chance to thrive and compete in the various Magic Millions and Inglis race series, as well as the feature 2 year old races next season.

On the racing front, we have had some outstanding performances from our miRunners horses. Global Eclipse made an eye-catching debut, finishing second at city class level at Sandown and backing that up with a third again in city class. He now heads to Geelong tomorrow, where he will step up in trip to 1700m. We have seen a string of strong results from miRunners horses, including multiple placings: Cardiologist (2nd), Farcited (1st and 2nd), Global Eclipse (2nd and 3rd), and Farnished (5th).  These results are a testament to the training, level of care, and development of our horses, and the effort that our trainers go to in providing first class care and creating the best possible environments for our horses.

Farcited delivered an incredible win in the Black Opal Preview at Canberra before narrowly going down to King of Pop in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes, running second in a race that was run in track record time over 1200m. He then was able to make the final field for the Group 1 Golden Slipper, which was a dream come true for his owners and a first for miRunners. Unfortunately, the race didn’t pan out his way, and he will now head to the paddock for a well deserved spell.

A warm welcome to all the new owners who have joined the miRunners family by purchasing a share in Johnny. As expected, shares in this exceptional Xtravagant colt are becoming limited, so if you haven’t secured your share, now is the time!

It is always a pleasure to return to South Australia and catch up with our owners based there, and this years trip to the Adelaide Magic Millions did not disappoint. The miRunners team has been actively scouting early-running 2 year old types, and we could not be happier with the new additions to our stable. We purchased two incredible colts, a Sandbar (half-brother to Farnan) nicknamed “Smithy” and a Graff nicknamed “Jake”, who will both be trained in Victoria. Smithy is heading to Charlotte Littlefield and her team at Hayfields Racing, while Jake  will be heading to the Price Kent team at Cranbourne.

We are also thrilled to introduce “Don”, our latest purchase from the Inglis Classic Sale. This striking colt by Pinatubo out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare, Brave Lass was secured from Sledmere Stud and will head to now 2 time Golden Slipper winning trainer Michael Freedman at Randwick.

Don & Jake will be the centrepiece of our new ownership package that we are going to be launching very soon. We are currently taking expressions of interest for those who would like to be added to our contact list for updates on horse availability. To be included, please email support@mirunners.com. Smithy (Sandbar x Moss My Name) will be on sale via the miRunners website within the next week.

A big congratulations to Mick Malone and Pauline Alix at North on achieving their first stakes winner with King of Pop, a fantastic milestone for the team and so incredibly well deserved. It is just a shame it had to be against us!

In other stable updates:

  • Farnished and Bold Sovereign have both been gelded.  Farnished is currently spelling at Evergreen Stud, and Bold Sovereign has been back pre-training at Hawksbury for a little over two weeks now.
  • Missy is doing well at CRC Equine and will return to Moody Racing in the near future. Her previous two stints at Pakenham exceeded Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman’s expectations.
  • Rusty Tycoon had an incident in his box and sustained a wound to his hindquarter. The stitches have now been removed, and he is back in the paddock.
  • Star Ambition is recovering well from his minor surgery and will be back in training in just over a month.

With sales continuing to go live and new horses joining the miRunners family, the months ahead are shaping up to be some of the most exciting yet. As always, the miRunners team is just a phone call away, so do not hesitate to reach out.

Looking forward to seeing you all trackside soon!

Cheers

Mick

From The Trainers

Bjorn Baker: A winning formula for Pierata Progeny

Bjorn Baker is no stranger to training some of the best racehorses in Australia, and his recent success on the track has only reinforced his reputation as one of Australia’s leading trainers. Now, the miRunners team is thrilled to announce that Bjorn will be the trainer of our new acquisition, Freddy, a stunning colt by Pierata out of Highland Daughter, purchased from Glenlogan Park in Queensland at the January Magic Millions sale.

Bjorn has already proven his ability to get the best out of Pierata’s progeny, having trained two of his offspring to race at city class.  Pierata who was bred by miRunners Head of Bloodstock Mick Malone has already produced stakes winners Coleman and Tobeornottobe, and with Bjorn’s expertise, Freddy is in excellent hands to maximise his potential.

Bjorn’s stable has been in flying form recently, with Group 1 victories and consistent success at all levels. His ability to develop young horses into high performing racehorses makes him an ideal trainer for Freddy, who will benefit from his hands on approach and proven training methods.

While shares in Freddy are not yet available, miRunners will be launching sales in the coming months. If you want to be part of this exciting ownership opportunity, register your interest now by emailing support@mirunners.com. Trackside

Farcited’s performance on the track

The Group 3 Black Opal Stakes at Canberra showcased our 2 year old, Farcited, by Golden Slipper winner Farnan, who fought out a thrilling finish. The Mick Malone bred King of Pop secured the win, but Farcited, the most expensive yearling by his sire, lost no admirers in a gallant second-place performance in a race that was run in track record time.

Purchased for $1.2 million from Bell River Thoroughbreds as part of the Farnan Partnership at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, Farcited  was identified early as a colt with star potential. Trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, Farcited has lived up to those high expectations. He announced himself as a serious racehorse with a brilliant debut win in the Black Opal Preview, earning his place as the favourite for the main event.

Jumping from the gates smartly in the Black Opal, Farcited took up the lead under jockey Adam Hyeronimus, dictating the pace with his natural speed. As they turned for home, it became a two horse war, with King of Pop closing in under Zac Lloyd. Despite fighting bravely to the line, Farcited was narrowly beaten by half a length.

Farcited’s potential is no surprise given his pedigree. He is the first foal of Group 1 Galaxy winner I Am Excited, a high-class mare from one of the most elite female families in Australian racing. This is the same family that produced Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel and the legendary four time Group 1 winner Atlantic Jewel, who went on to produce Hong Kong Champion Russian Emperor.

Tragically, I Am Excited passed away last August, making her 2023 Zoustar filly her last foal. With that in mind, Farcited carries even greater sentimental and genetic significance as her only racing progeny.

What’s Next for Farcited?

With two outstanding performances to start his career, Farcited had well and truly earned his place in the world’s richest 2 year old race, the Group 1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill. Taking on the best juveniles in the country, he lined up in the prestigious event, adding his name to a storied race history that has launched the careers of many champions.

The race was run at the traditional incredibly high tempo, to have any chance to win you needed to be on the rail. Farcited to his credit from the second widest barrier was able to find the rail however he burnt too much fuel getting there, as he worked into the straight he succumbed to a minor knee injury that prompted Josh Parr to not pressure him any further and pull him up in the run to look after him. The appropriate vetting and scans have been conducted which revealed some minor injuries which he will easily overcome with a 12 week spell at Kia Ora Stud.

The miRunners team and the Farcited ownership group could not be more proud of his first preparation as it was an absolute dream come true to have a horse perform the way he has in 3 starts. We look forward to seeing Farcited return to the stable as a 3 year old next season.
