Bellarine Beauty puts in a solid debut performance to finish 4th

Bellarine Beauty stepped out on debut in Race 2 at Seymour yesterday afternoon, with jockey Craig Wiliams on board. The field narrowed down to 9 runners, with many of them solidly in the market and having their first starts. 3YO filly Bellarine Beauty jumped out of the gates a tad slower than what we have seen in her trials and struggled to find a place in the field, eventually settling 3 wide the trip. Despite this, and being bumped at the 200m by the eventual winner and race favourite, she still managed to hit the line nicely and finish 4th.…

Op-Ed: Innovation for television – what racing can learn from sailing

Golf, cricket and sailing… these are the three sports that struggled to ignite one degree of interest in me as a television spectator in my youth. When they came on tv, I would turn to a book until Dad flicked the channel over to watch the next race at Forbury Park.  Like many sports, golf, cricket and sailing have technical concepts requiring a degree of specialist knowledge for the viewer to remain interested. This makes it difficult for a novice to start watching without irritating a fellow viewer with questions. In the ’90s, expert television commentators were heavily relied on…

What rest really means for a young thoroughbred

Sometimes we can get frustrated with our horse spending so much time resting in the paddock. However, studies have found that this rest time is necessary for a racehorse to fully develop and perform at their best, especially as younger horses.  Over a 12-month period, a typical thoroughbred in work spends between 42-60% of its time in training, with the remaining time turned out for a spell.  There are a number of reasons for giving a horse a lay-up from training. Lameness is the most common underlying reason, followed by viral colds, ‘tying up’, especially in fillies, “training off” after…

Not A Single Doubt offspring continue to impress on the track

5YO mare Kenedna, who is now trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace flew home from the back of the field on Friday night at Moonee Valley to finish third in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes. Kenedna was slow out of the gates and settled in last position, before bursting into the race on the turn and absolutely charging home. It was an impressive effort after a short 3-week freshen up, and has filled her trainers and connections with hope for this preparation. Watch the race replay below:   This 5YO mare by sire Not A Single Doubt has had…
