It was tough conditions on the Gold Coast on Saturday April 20, with the last 5 races on the race card being abandoned due to bad weather. However, this didn’t stop our young 2YO filly Lyrical Girl make her racing debut in Race 3 over 900m in the TAB QTIS 2YO Fillies Maiden Plate.
Trainer Tony Gollan was impressed with how she performed in the run, and how she handled the tough conditions in her debut race. Lyrical Girl jumped behind the pack, before picking up speed and sitting just behind midfield. It seemed she just couldn’t get out in the straight, coming to the outside then back to the inside finishing strongly in 5th position.

In his post-race report, trainer Tony Gollan said: “I thought this filly was excellent actually. Traveled really nicely, you could see in the track there was a horrendous amount of kickback. She got through the ground quite fine despite this. We were buried on the inside and tried to get to the outside, but our filly was getting the kickback of sand and mud in her face so eventually went back to the inside and finished the race strongly”
It was a great day for our owners, with over 60 in attendance to watch their filly Lyrical Girl make her debut. Owners were able to see their filly pre and post race, as well as watching her parade in the mounting yard and listening to the jockey comments before and after the race. She certainly lost no admirers in her run, as displayed in the video below:
“She’s come through the run great. She ate well over the weekend, looked great today and has been really good under the saddle” said Gollan.
Lyrical Girl will now head back to the Gold Coast on May 8 to contest a 1200m maiden, and with a run now under her belt I’m sure we will all see some great improvement in her next race.
