This is without a doubt one of the biggest and most exciting days on the Australian racing calendar. In preparation for the Golden Slipper this Saturday, we have decided to go back over previous Slipper winners and the last 3 wins!
The Golden Slipper Stakes is a Group 1 race for two-year-old thoroughbreds run over 1,200 metres at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. It is the premier two-year-old race in Australia and is the world’s richest race for two-year-old thoroughbreds, with a prize pool of $3,500,000.
2016 – Capitalist (by sire Written Tycoon)
Capitalist took out the 2016 Golden Slipper Stakes at odds of $8, winning impressively for trainers P&P Snowden. After being defeated in the Todman Stakes two weeks prior to the Slipper, many abandoned Capitalist and thought he couldn’t complete the Magic Millions and Golden Slipper double up. Despite a betting drift, Capitalist truly repaid his connections when he took out the slipper in 2016. Watch the replay below:
2017 – She Will Reign (by sire Manhattan Rain)
Filly She Will Reign took out the Golden Slipper in 2017, winning impressively in the wet despite being known as a dry track runner. A $20,000 yearling purchase, She Will Reign gave her trainer Gary Portelli his life’s ambition by winning the Golden Slipper and provided her syndicate of mostly first-time ordinary Australian owners with a fairytale result. This weekend, Portelli hopes to win his second Slipper with the half sister of She Will Reign, Time To Reign. Watch the replay below:
2018 – Estijaab (by sire Snitzel)
Just last year, Estijaab led from start to finish to take out the 2018 Golden Slipper Stakes with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle. The gate speed shown by Estijaab from a wide draw was incredible and the ride was labelled emotionally by the Hawkes Team as “a real winning ride”. Purchased for $1.7m, Estijaab has surely repaid her connections, having won over $2.5m in prize money so far in her career. Watch the replay below:
