It was an unforgettable day of racing on Saturday March 9, as the unlikely winners just kept on coming across all meets throughout the day. Amongst those unexpected victories was Harlem, defending his Australian Cup Crown at $41, providing leading female jockey Jamie Kah with her first Group 1 win. It was a fairytale of a ride from both Harlem and Kah, with trainer David Hayes describing it as a real “11/10 ride”.
In last years Australian Cup, Harlem, trained by David Hayes, won the race at $61, and despite not winning or being placed in his eight runs since that triumph, he managed to fight out the finish. He proved too strong for second placing Shillelagh, winning by half a head, with leader Trap For Fools finishing in third place.
It was an impressive ride by Kah, describing her first Group 1 victory as “ just the best feeling in the world”. She gave all credit to Harlem, saying he was “the toughest horse who just wouldn’t give in, that’s what he was out there”. Watch the impressive replay below:
Despite being such a roughie in the field, trainer David Hayes and the Lindsay Park team thought Harlem was the stable’s best hope in the race.
“He showed incredible fight, he was beaten twice and just kicked back. I thought he was in terrific form, better than last year, and he was able to do it again which is just great” said trainer David Hayes.
For Kah, her first Group 1 winner came sooner than expected following her move to Melbourne from Adelaide just a few months back. She has dominated the Adelaide racing scene over the past few seasons, and decided to take a step forward in her career by moving to Melbourne not too long ago.
To her surprise, she didn’t think a Group 1 win would come so soon, but is grateful for the Lindsay Park team constantly supporting her in her career both in Adelaide and now in Melbourne. Although she is based at Cranbourne, Kah regularly travels to different training centres in a bid to build her connections in Melbourne.
“I tried to get to Euroa as much as I could and whenever they wanted me for jump-outs and it has really paid off. Lindsay Park supported me in Adelaide and now that I have taken the leap they continue to support me here. I didn’t think it would happen so soon!” said Kah.
