miRunners owners excited by what this means for their filly in 2020
Bjorn Baker knew his horse well and determined a plan to win that proved there was no magic in his victories! Baker Racing blitzed Magic Millions with two wins, a close second and a fourth taking away over $1.4 million for his owners.
Bjorn Baker graced the winning podium twice on Saturday at the Magic Millions Race Day on the Gold Coast, winning both the $1m Magic Millions Snippets with 6yo mare Egyptian Symbol and the Magic Millions Cup with 5yo gelding Redouble. Out of his four runners on the day, Baker had two wins, a close-up second and a fourth, making it a truly remarkable Magic Millions Race Day for Baker Racing.
It was third time lucky for mare Egyptian Symbol, who produced a devastating turn of speed from last to win the $1 million Magic Millions Snippets after three previous attempts to win a feature on Queensland’s biggest race day. Jockey Jason Collett rode Egyptian Symbol patiently before switching her to the outside in the straight to win over the top of gelding Fiery Heights.
In contrast to previous visits to the Gold Coast, Baker took a different approach this year with Egyptian Symbol by aiming the mare for a first-up tilt at the 1200m Magic Millions Snippets. From six previous first-up attempts, Egyptian Symbol has won four times, prompting Baker to target the Snippets while the mare was fresh.
“You live and learn as a trainer and find there’s many ways to skin a cat,” Baker said.
“It’s taken me a long time but I finally realised that first-up and fresh is the best way to go with this mare.”
Egyptian Symbol has now earned connections $1,494,355 in prize money as a six-year-old.
The Snippets wasn’t the only impressive win by a Baker trained horse on Magic Millions Race Day. In the last race of the day, gelding Redouble scored an impressive victory in the $1m Magic Millions Cup. Winning jockey Craig Williams angled Redouble into the clear in the straight and held off Sambro to win by a length with Shogun Sun a neck away third.

Following the win, Baker charged through the enclosure knocking over his fellow part-owners as they began to celebrate together in style.
“I’m just the lucky benefactor of a very, very good horse,” Baker said.
Redouble was bought for $200,000 as a yearling at the Gold Coast and has now earned his connections $953,500 as a five-year-old.
His other two runners for the day, Goodfella and Irithia, both performed well to finish second and fourth respectively, capping off an unforgettable day for Baker Racing.
