We recently had a discussion with David Raphael, the man who purchased Rubick, to gain a little more context on current rumours and why Rubick has trainers walking with a spring in their step. Dive in for more depth below.
My background with Rubick… I’m the guy who signed the docket to buy him, so I suppose the line is; we didn’t at the time think it was going to be such a game changer for us.
I went to the Gold Coast Sale met with my trainer and everybody had gone and looked at all their inspections before they arrived at the Gold Coast. We all found him at the sales and liked him. I think I’ve quoted it a few times, but we were all sort of leaning on the fence going over all of our yearling picks and we all mentioned him. My line was… “that page will be $1,000,000” and my trainer said to me “no, he won’t be that expensive. I said “well I’ll be buying him.”
We were able to get him for $460,000, amazingly he turned into a super racehorse and now a pretty hot prospect at stud for all of us invovled.

I just liked him. Obviously pedigree was a big factor because I thought he was the best bred horse in the book and then type… well I just loved the horse. The champion Encosta De Lago is his sire – and some of his stock could be bigger, as people know, however this yearling appeared perfectly proportioned and neat, not heavy. I like the Encosta’s in the style he was as a yearling, after watching them for that long. I didn’t like the Encosta’s with the big heavy set, you know… oversized horses. And I just thought he was going to be an outstanding horse as he filled out. I just loved the way he moved, loved his attitude and everything about him when he was a yearling. We all liked him!
When he came back at Caulfield and he beat the older horses, that to me was a really impressive moment. He had done everything as a 2 year old and he came back as a 3 year old and showed everybody that he still has amazing speed.
The beauty is a lot of people are going to get a lot of benefit out of him. He has been priced at a service fee that most breeders can afford. That’s the most exciting thing for anybody who has invested in him, with their own broodmares, they have got into a really good young stallion that has got the pedigree of some of the best stallions worldwide in my opinion.
And now it is such an exciting time as it seems everyone is talking about his youngsters who are right now poised to hit racetracks for the first time, there’s upside for everybody if his stock run as well as everyone is saying they will.
For just $275 per unit and a monthly fee of $15, you can quickly become a part of the buzz that is rapidly emerging on the progeny of the exciting Rubick.
