In an industry traditionally closed off to everyone but the wealthy, miRunners have made a significant impact by making premium thoroughbreds trained by leading trainers affordable to the everyday Australian.
The progressive Australian startup has been offering the opportunity to buy into a premium thoroughbred racehorse trained by household names including Melbourne Cup-winning Gai Waterhouse and David Hayes for as little as $165 plus a nominal monthly fee.
In just over 12 months they’ve managed to bring over 1,800 owners into the racing industry from all walks of life.
RECENT NEWS: Performance update for our first six thoroughbreds
To date, miRunners have purchased six thoroughbreds from the Gold Coast Magic Millions. Four of these horses have already sold out with only two left with available units. These two horses are to be trained by up-and-coming New South Wales trainer, Bjorn Baker, and Queensland’s leading trainer Tony Gollan.
miRunners’ first horse, Saganaki, was purchased at the 2017 Gold Coast Magic Millions for $165,000, was named by the Australian public and completed its trials and preparation with promising results. Now a gelding, Saganaki had his first start in May 2018, finishing strongly to take third, followed by an impressive second place finish soon after.
The second miRunners horse, named Shezawitness by her owners, was purchased at the 2018 edition of the Gold Coast Magic Millions and has been matched with Caulfield-based trainer, Mick Price. The 2016 filly by Star Witness out of Peahen sold out her 1,000 units in little over a month.
As a trainer with over 2,000 career wins including 36 Group 1 victories, a win rate of 17% and a place rate of 42%, Mick Price has announced Shezawitness as a potential 2YO runner for later this year.

“I’m very happy with this filly. She worked away from her galloping partner and ran well in the last furlong which is an indication of her getting it right. Physically and mentally she may make a two-year-old runner,” he explained after a recent practice run.
“She will have until the end of July off and work August until September and we may be racing pre-Christmas depending on how she responds to a nice, light two-year-old prep. Her timing could be right. So far so good.”

Gai Waterhouse and David Hayes have also started working with their miRunners’ thoroughbreds after both selling out quickly.
Zoushack and Not A Royal Doubt have both recently been named. Both their trainers are impressed with their progress so far.
You can get involved in miRunners too as, thankfully, it’s not too late to become an owner. Two of miRunners’ first thoroughbreds currently have units available:
- Rubick x Slainte filly: trained by Bjorn Baker and based in Western Sydney
- Your Song x Sheeznodoubt filly: trained by Tony Gollan and based in Queensland
Both horses were purchased for $275,000 at the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions. This means units are just $275 each with a monthly fee of $15 per month (and $5 for any additional units).
