Saganaki and miRunners debuted on the track today with a strong performance in Race 3 at Port Macquarie today.
Purchased by miRunners and sold to 400+ owners at only $165 per unit, Saganaki gave his owners a great start to racing and hinted that he may be something special at a slightly longer distance.
Drawing Barrier 5 and facing a number of strong opponents, Saganaki impressed by powering home on the final straight despite looking under pressure initially. He stormed into third place and would have claimed second if the race was a few metres longer.

It was the strong finish that gives owners hope that he may very well be a 1600m prospect. All in all, a fantastic debut run in what can be a very unpredictable 2YO class.
When Saganaki pulled up sore in November last year after looking like a promising early 2YO, his owners experienced the elation and disappointment of ownership at the highest level. It was like riding the roller coaster at full speed and proved just how hard it is to find and build a winner in today’s elite racing.
But Kris Lees was quietly confident that a spell and gelding would set this runner up for a long career and today’s run has proved that yet again Lees is a master horseman and patience is a must at this level.
Today’s debut was a historic moment for racing in Australia. Never have 400 owners been able to race a premium thoroughbred with a quality trainer at such an affordable price. The experience has proven to be so good many of them now own multiple horses with miRunners.
Since Saganaki, miRunners have purchased five more yearlings: and they’re selling like lightning.

From NSW top-10 jockey, Aaron Bullock who has ridden Saganaki throughout his preparation.
“I’m really happy, he’s going to be a good miler. Today he got a chance to settle and travel and once I got into him he was off the bit and got going again,” said Bullock.
“He’ll come into his own once he gets to a mile. Once he gets to that distance he’ll come into his own. He’ll win plenty of races as a 3YO miler.”
